*STRAIGHT JAW LOCKING PLIER-10 IN LENGTH
Application
The spacing between the tool's jaws may be changed using a screw at the back, and it typically takes a few seconds of trial and error to find the right configuration for whatever object you need the pliers to hold. The jaws will close together with an audible "click" and lock into place once the ideal setting has been dialled in. The pliers' jaws literally latch onto the material once they are locked into position, gripping it like a vice. To release the jaws, there is a separate lever integrated into the handle that, when pressed, instantaneously releases them.
Locking pilers come in a variety of styles today. The way the pliers lock in place is one distinguishing characteristic. Some locking pliers use a screw to further tighten their grasp. This variety most closely resembles Petersen's original creation, which later became known as the Vise-Grip wrench.
